Your iPhone Was Made By Chinese Slaves, Literally
In music news5/19/10
An article by Businessinsider.com has been released that shows the working and living conditions of the Foxconn Factory in China. The factory is responsible for almost all iPhones, iPods, iPads and Macs being manufactured in the world.
The article attempts to paint the workers life as miserable and brings up the fact that there have been 9 suicide attempts already this year. But that is out of 400,000 employees. Workers work 8 hour days standing up and the article states that "the workers is living through life like a clock."
The workers have living quarters at the factory but some say they don't even know their roommates name.
The article tries to convey that the workers are being mistreated which is leading to the suicides but, honestly, a lot of Americans work long hours standing up and "dream of being rich someday." The suicide rate at the Chinese factory is actually less than the general population.
But what the article failed to focus on is that the Chinese workers are being paid $130 a month. They can't even afford to buy the products they make. That is the real travesty. According to Justlanded.com, the bare minimum salary to survive in China is $400 a month. The average monthly income is $1,000 a month. The Apple factory workers are getting paid way lower than is needed.
Apple is making a TON of money off this "slave" labor and should really pay these people more, don't you think?

I know just about everything we wear, eat and use is made by cheap overseas labor. But that doesn't make it right, does it?
May 19, 2010 at 3:37 PMThe cost of living in China is much, much lower than the United States. $130 a month sounds like nothing to you and I, but it is a livable salary in China.
May 19, 2010 at 4:16 PMAlso, I think you meant "tragedy," not "travesty."
The average wage to www.justlanded.com, the minimal amount need to survive is $400 a month. Average is $1,000 a month with some of the top apartments in Beijing and Hong Kong going for $10,000 a month.
May 19, 2010 at 4:47 PMJust because the factory gives them housing, I don't think $130 a month is cutting it.
And I meant travesty. The $130 a month is a mockery of a wage.
I recently had a class on East Asian cultures, and this does not surprise me. The factory workers are grossly underpaid, and working conditions are not regulated. Many workers go months without getting paid, then the factories shut down and the owners skip town without ever paying them.
